2007 Pinot Noir, Balistreri Vineyard

2007 Pinot Noir, Balistreri Vineyard
The 2007 vintage for Pinot Noir was truly exceptional, perhaps the best seen in 25 years and possibly the best ever!

Situated between Bodega and Freestone this unique vineyard is a mere 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean making this a great example of true cold climate winemaking. The cold fog rolls in off the Pacific and envelopes the hills of Freestone from late afternoon until burning off by mid morning. Thee slow maturing process provides complexity and the cold nights keep acid levels high. Yields were light as is typical with 4.6 tons from the four acres. It would be impossible to grow any red varietal except Pinot Noir. Just too cold. But oh how Pinot Noir loves this environment and as a winemaker this fruit is a special privilege to work with.

The 2007 vintage showcases the wonderfully expressive character and purity of Pinot Noir and speaks of a very special vineyard. Now a year in bottle, there is a complexity and depth which is truly special. It is a powerful wine in a very elegant way. The palate is showing the early character of an elegant silkiness. Black-cherry and fresh raspberry with elegant spice and earth dominate the aromatics. The proximity to the Pacific is found in subtle form in the nose. The flavors offer a broad range of raspberry and warm black-cherry surrounded by all-spice and hints of vanilla. You feel the structure and strength of this wine. I have been making Pinot Noir for many years and this wine is special. Cheers! – Anthony Austin, Winemaker, May 12, 2010

Detailed Wine Information

Alcohol:14.6%
Appellation:Sonoma Coast
Harvest Notes:Harvesting in the early morning in a cold state and crushing quickly is critical in maintaining the unique nuances of Pinot Noir. Ripeness levels were in the ideal range of 23 to 25 Degrees Brix and showcased outstanding phenolic maturity. After being hand picked and sorted, clusters were de-stemmed into small one-ton fermenters with 20 % left to whole cluster. An extended cold soak of 10 days delivered all that this fruit had to offer. Gentle manipulation through hand punch downs performed 2 to 3 times per day achieved a balanced extraction. The juice was then chilled and inoculated to finish fermentation with lots pressed at 3 degrees brix and then put to barrel.
Oak:70% New French Oak

Time In Oak:18 months
Varietal:100% Pinot Noir - Dijon Clones 114, 115, 667, 777, 828
Vintage Notes:French oak of 36 month air dried with medium plus toast from Tonnellerie Sirugue in Burgundy are my barrel of choice. The grain is very tightly formed and its flavor profile is both elegant and complex offering warm spice characteristics. We have used 70% new barrels for the 2007. After an initial 10 months in barrel, the wine was racked in August 2008 and returned to barrel. The final blend was lightly fined to preserve and enhance both richness and texture. Fully evolved after 18 months, it was lightly filtered and bottled in April 2009.
